Removing Sticky Labels

#1 Post by niemeyjt »

Having just tried unsuccessfully to remove the glue from a sticky label with isopropanol - what do others use with more success?

Suggestions have included acetone, meths and white spirit - but I am loathe to set up a chemical store in the apartment in the hope of finding something which works.

I normally soak the container in bucket of water for 24 hours or so and then scrub off the label. Some are more difficult than others.

I remove most of the label by peeling off or soaking in water and then use one of the degreasers, essence C or essence F. OK on glass and plastics.

It seems so improbable. I wonder who first found it worked and why they tried it in the first place.

I can't remember where I got the tip from, but I do remember the first time I tried it. The renovation works had finished and the double glazed windows each had a sticker on - firstly to show which side should be to the outer and secondly to deter some builders mate from hoying debris through an opening that is not an opening. The windows were probably in place a good nine months before the internal work was finished so the labels were well and truly glued. OH had spent a couple of days with scrapers and non-stick scrubbing pads and making little headway. When I got home at the weekend, out with the WD40 and all 20 removed within an hour.

Maybe it is similar base to white spirits - which the local china shop used to use to remove labels?

I just had a very messy toolbox arrive - and it cleaned up perfectly.

I read somewhere that WD40 was being developed as a water dispersant and that the 40th forulation met the target performance. Could just be an urban myth but maybe a grain of truth in there somewhere.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

They say if it moves and shouldn't, you need Duct Tape.

If it doesn't move but should, then you need WD-40.

And I do have both in the boot of the car.

And this is supposedly a genuine advert from 1964 (without the hyphen)
