We had our annual check up/sweeping for the wood burning stove set up this morning.

He left me a ‘certificate’ for insurance purposes.

I notice at the bottom is written
‘ Selon la législation, deux ramonages sont obligatoires par an dont un en hiver’

Really? we’ve only ever done one.

Now doesn’t count as winter I presume so we should be programming another in feb?

I should check the legislation. Just in case it says preferable and the ramoneur is using that as a business push.

Can you still get the cleaning "logs" you burn and do a self certificate?

Having a low pitch roof which I can/could walk up, with one corner only 3 feet above the rising ground, I have always cleaned my chimney from the top down every August. Never had a problem and I often wondered how people got round regulations by 'self-signing'. Pretty much what I was doing.

Don't do it now of course, no more fires, all air to air.

It does often depend on your area .. in Morbihan it is once a year. Our Insurer is happy with once a year too.
It helps if you have a tubed conduit, as we do, from a wood-burning device.
Untubed open fires, often with a twisty evacuation route and nooks and crannies, can be potentially dangerous with a build-up of soot, tar, bird-droppings, nest remnants etc. Potentially why twice a year is/was considered to be safer.
The regulations allow you to clean the flue yourself .. as long as you note the date and time so, effectively, you are self-certificating.

I never knew that Sue, so just got on with it. There is a tube in it though, so easy to clean every year.
