How do folks manage?

#1 Post by L Austin France »

Without a dishwasher that is.
Ours packed up last thursday & a new'un sourced, collected & fitted by lunchtime the following saturday.
Getting the Marigolds out & washing up after every meal just when you want to relax is a right PITA but it had to be done as the kitchen soon was a mess without it. Dirty cooking things & dishes are just yuck if left too long.
Never the less the amount of small 'stuff' accumulating in a washing up bowl (remember them?) awaiting washing was amazing. I didn't know we had so many coffee mugs etc.
It's so handy to simply chuck 'stuff' in a machine after using it & leave the sink etc clear.
Here's hoping the new'un lasts as long as the last one. Two days hand washing was enough for this household :)

I cannot imagine life without a dishwasher, especially around the holidays. Even our single daughter has one. I hate having things collect in the sink.

We've enjoyed a silent Bosch (house in USA), a very nice Miele (house in Bédoin) and our current one is a very quiet Siemens. All excellent purchases.

I’m with you on this!
My cousin, now in her mid eighties, advised me to have a dishwasher 50 years ago, but I didn’t get my first until there was one in the house I bought 30 years ago.
Since then, I’ve never been without one. Even now, on my own, I use the dishwasher for one short run ever night. The hot water system here runs off 15 litres before I get hot water in the kitchen so, for me, the dishwasher is reasonably economical.

I could survive without a dishwasher, but not without a washing machine !
That said, we bought our first dishwasher 25 years ago and we currently have one of those "silent" ones, brilliant.

How do folks manage?

I bought our first in 1982 when I was at home with 4 children under 7, a dog and 3 cats + kittens. It was 2nd-hand and cost 15 quid - it lasted 2 and a half years so I got my money's worth. Its successor was a new Hotpoint which died one month out of guarantee. I kicked up a huge fuss (as you would) and faced with the sales director's continued intransigence and females-know-bugger-all attitude, threatened to give the matter the publicity it deserved. He caved in and replaced it.
We had a compact in our last house and another here. I wouldn't be without it although I'm not allowed to fill it as apparently only men know how to fill machines.

Absolutely correct !
At least it is in this house.
Each time I put stuff in the machine I have to re-arrange things Mme LAF has put in & always achieve a lot more free space.
I'm beginning to think she does does it on purpose but I'll not give her the pleasure of mentioning it

Marriage teaches you a lot. I didn't realise until then that was a right way and a wrong way of putting a milk bottle in the fridge

If you had spent more time washing dishes you might not have had 4 children :o

How do folks manage?

I was never bothered about dishwashers either way until I ended up in a little harbourside place in Poole. The kitchen was so tiny there was no place to stack the dirty dishes to wash them later. I discovered there was a clever dishwasher design that fitted inside a standard kitchen cupboard and the original cupboard door was attached to the front of it. It was large enough for a two place setting and a couple of pans. Called the Servis Secret. Once I saw how it dealt with glassware I was sold for life. I'm not that fussed about all the rest but glasses drive me nuts if they are not clear and gleaming. Life's too short to waste on doing glasses by hand. I seriously considered one for my boat when I moved onto it.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.
