It seems some French wine growers are unhappy with their Spanish counterparts. What a waste - not to mention pollution risk.

French winegrowers block entry of trucks with wine from Spain

Hundreds of French winegrowers blocked a highway near the border with Spain this Thursday to prevent the entry of trucks loaded with Spanish wine as a sign of protest, in a context tense due to inflation and worse harvests.

Whilst I have sympathy with the French wine growers who have struggled with climate problems that is not the fault of the Spanish. I suppose jealousy and the need to find someone to blame rises to the fore.
Setting fire to a bottling plant in the Aude because it bottles wine from Spain is surely not legal ?

A lot of French wine was thrown away because of over production and the lack of demand, p'raps the demonstrators think if they stop the Spanish stuff coming in they'll sell more of their own wine.

Spanish wine aint bad these days so there is a quality issue in the lower price range. Bust char is basically right, too much of the stuff at a time when younger folk are drinking much less wine.

I guess the distilled alcohol can also be used to contaminate petrol - sad then it was wasted here.

The DW would have liked to help in getting rid of a few hundred gallons, per week of course :shh:

+1 Char and Tagh.
The French have always tried to keep out foreign wine - the choice has always been very limited. It's virtually impossible to get a good Rioja here - and sherry for those who like it - is near nigh impossible. Who drinks those ghastly cooked "apéro" wines that supermarket shelves are stacked with ? We've never come across anyone who does.

No kidding. We enjoy lots of French wines and are fortunate that they are easily found at amazingly reasonable prices. There are several Spanish ones I like too, but try to find some Sherry or even Italian wines. Not round here or any other place we've lived in France, short of Paris. Even in Paris, you had to search.

Thank dog for Lidl. We can enjoy wine from Chile, Australia, and California as well as French all at sensible prices. They sometimes even offer palatable Italian. We would certainly drink more French if it was more consistent and cheaper.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Super U has Australian, and Chile wines in but compared to UK, expensive, and a very limited, they were at the bottom of the shelves tucked away in the corner, as the DW is a Port & Lemon sort of a girl , she finds that there is a choice.
