My lucky day

#1 Post by RobertArthur »

If I were a musician, I could have picked up my guitar and rephrased this song: C'est le plus beau jour de ma vie, j'ai retrouvé mon chapeau. In other words of course.

We went to the déchetterie, saturday afternoon. They were very helpful there, unloading all the stuff. This time I did not follow standard procedures before going there, remove everything from the boot, toolbox, lug wrench, detachable swan neck tow bar and a warning triangle. The last one already for about 50 years my steady companion in several cars I owned, in its red plastic box. So we know each other quite well by now.

Back from the déchetterie, a very empty car, too empty: missing in action the warning triangle. Probably binned. Nothing serious of course, but......I should have known better, standard procedures etc. This afternoon I helped one of my neighbours loading his trailer also with stuff for the bin. The first thing that I saw, driving up to several containers, was something red, bathing in the sunshine. My triangle, asking me why it had to stay there, all alone, in the already cold autumn nights. Did I do something wrong to deserve such a fate? I offered my apologies. So happy together again.

Phew! Well recovered! :D

I usually use our works van for dechetterie visits, and if it's not a full load then I often have some of my gardening stuff still in the front, as I might be en route to work. If anyone is kind enough to help, I section off the rubbish and say "nothing beyond this point"!

That was very fortunate !
Odd bits like tools, warning triangle etc are under the floor or in side pockets in the boot - less risk of dumping them by mistake. We generally save up rubbish and use the trailer - my only fear of unloading loose garden rubbish, is leaving my pitchfork behind !! That said, I did a great swap at the dechetterie : a wide yard brush, which I no longer used, for one of those reed brushes you see here but not in the UK. I was pleased to see that 3 years or so later, the yard brush is still being used there !

Never mind leaving a pitchfork. On one of our trips to the tip we uncoupled the trailer, emptied it into the skip and took the trailer back to the car. Got home - no trailer - I had forgotten to couple it up. Back to tip still there.

A Trigger broom:

This is the best broom I have ever had, been with me for 15 years or more. Just 3 new heads and 4 new handles.

PS attributed to Trigger, a character in Only Fools and Horses.

Ah thanks @exile
We've got one of those too, and we've had it for more years than I can count. It was always much more "wieldy" than the wide (about 24") yard brush though less efficient for the large flat surfaces round our stables.

This is my favourite now, gets into all the little corners and is great on rough ground, stone terrace, barns etc and light as a feather :
