Boules keeps you young.

#1 Post by L Austin France »

Just back from my monday session at the local boulodrome where the members do nothing but laugh, joke & mickey take.
I'm no spring chicken but far from the oldest with a spritely 88 & 90 year old being the main jokers & two of the best players.
It's just like 'The last of the summer wine'. :D

I'd like to play boules (pétanque in these parts). A lot of wimmin play here, including my hairdresser opposite, who told me gleefully a while back that she'd beaten my son-in-law, a self-confessed champion...

Ours is Breton Boules. Bit like Bowls but with reconstituted stone bowls. Boules get rolled to a petite (Jack) on a rolled sand alley
about 20 m ln length.
We've got wimmin members & jolly good they are.

We moved from just by the cathedral last week to under the nearby plane trees - still far too hot. The temperature dropped today plus there was a pleasant little breeze, but I’ll be pushing to stay under the trees this week.

There are several of us women who play, but it’s interesting hearing comments from male tourists from other parts of France, particularly when a woman plays a particularly good shot.

I haven’t played pétanque for 22 months, so I find I really need to concentrate hard. We’ve joined a bowls club in the UK and find that neither of us is very good at it, despite being coached by the club coach, who’s played for England a lot. Definitely better at pétanque than bowls - all the little bumps and stones help, I find.

Back in the UK my parents played a lot of Crown Green, I joined in a few times but not very good at getting the Bias correct, they were still playing indoor in to their 70s.

We joined the bowls club this year rather older than that.
