Why oh why

Has every plastic bottle manufacturer changed the screw off lid so that a piece remains holding it on. I first noticed this on milk bottles and it really pisses me off.

Or, am I missing something crucial to the earth’s survival?

Yes - the idea is that the lid does not get lost so when you put the bottle into recycling (you do, don't you) the lid gets recycled too.

Yes, it pisses me off as well. I deliberately break it off - it is more comfortable.

Yes, it is annoying. More and more bottles are doing this.

I always squash the bottle to lessen the space it takes up and then put the lid back on and yes always in the right bin.
I’ve got a pair of tweezer’s in the kitchen and just clip them so there is no mess for me to clear.

If you push the lid right back it should stay ot of the way ,but yes I agree it is a nuisance
The other annoying thing in the UK is they are now putting plain white tops on plastic milk bottles which is okay if you only have say skimmed in the fridge but if you have more than one sort you have to double check

Not every bottle. Maybe all the bottles you buy, but we buy water (occasionally), fruit drinks, javel and milk none of which have the tops you describe.

Be patient. It will come.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Glad I'm not the only one being driven crazy by this stupid idea. I've lost count of the number of times the damn' lid has swung round and directed the liquid all over the worktop

I don’t like it on bottles with narrow necks but I find it fine on wide necked bottles.

Except of course that the lid and the bottle are made from 2 different plastics. The bottles (in Europe) are PET (milk may be different). The tops are HDPE.

I always break ours off for the simple reason that we have a dedicated charity collection of the tops. Last I checked - some years ago now, I confess - HDPE recyclate was running at about €1200 per tonne. Mind you, that is a lot of bottle tops.

Our Super U has a recycling machine for PET drinks bottles - but not milk - so including the lid means the quality of the recyclate is degraded due to HDPE contamination.

AS for milk, our supplies also have the stay-attached lids - a right pain because they sometimes spring back whilepouring, so spraying milk around the kitchen.
