Debit card fraud

#1 Post by BishyB »

A friend of mine in UK recently received a new Santander card. With the card came details of how to activate it. She was a little puzzled as her current one still had 9 months on it. Also it wasn't a contactless card that she normally has. She contacted Santander who stated that they had not sent her a new card and if she had activated it she could have lost all her money. Major fraud squad now involved. Bank issuing her with new card and she has changed all her security details, passwords etc.

Good grief !! It never ends.

At least she noticed it before disaster struck.

What a good thing she checked - awful to think that she might have had her account emptied, which might happen to others who just accept the new card and activate it.

Crikey I am normally up to speed with such goings on but I hadn't heard of that one.
Thank goodness the lack of 'sans contact' was noticed. Bravo your UK friend.

I always check up on this sort of posting and unsurprisingly, this is doing the rounds.I've seen an identical posting to BishyB's on various forums and Facebook with everyone claiming "a friend of mine" or "someone I know" .....

I deactivated any contactless on my cards, if in the event you misplace / lose it, then someone might have a field day before you notice the loss.

My bank, Credit Agricole, will only allow contactless payment of up to 45 euros in any 24 hour period.

Posts warning people about a possible scam involving Santander bank cards have been shared tens of thousands of times on Facebook.

The posts largely use the same text, which was being shared at least as early as October 2020.

It did seem quite an effort to manufacture cards as part of a scam - maybe good returns if it worked if it was true.

Card manufacturing machines can be quite small about the size of an office printer and are not very expensive
