Random math question about electricity usage!
Interesting thread. I used to drink a lot of coffee, probably about equal to the amount of tea of other folks. I can't bear instant so tend to use ground coffee in paper filters. Not brilliant but passable. I have tasted the output of the little capsules and found them very good but the price of them and the price of the machines are a non starter for me. When the price of ground coffee steadily went up I reduced my coffee consumption. One cup a day now after breakfast. The best cuppa I ever had was from a fancy Italian La Pavoni expresso machine that looked like a piece of lab equipment. I swapped a Jag rear axle for it from a friend. I see today the nearest equivalent to the exact model is nudging €1000.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Hands up all those who are very concerned about the future of our planet, but use several little plastic or metal containers of coffee each day instead of using a washable spoon

Not really concerned about the future of the planet. The planet has survived droughts, ice ages, and big asteroid strikes and still it survives.
Human civilisations come and go. Thinking we can avoid this natural cycle is a combination of arrogance and seizing an opportunity to make money by feeding general paranoia.

A spoon used to extract energy-using freeze-dried coffee granules, delivered in a very energy-using glass jar, which is heavy and so consumes a great deal of energy to be delivered from the jar manufacturer to the coffee producer to the warehouse to the store to you - and if you are a very good person - to the recycling bin to the recycling centre to the recovery company - who will then expend enormous amounts of energy to remelt the glass so that it can again be moulded into another glass object.Quiksilver wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 7:34 pm Hands up all those who are very concerned about the future of our planet, but use several little plastic or metal containers of coffee each day instead of using a washable spoon![]()

When you point a finger at someone; remember there are 4 digits pointing back at you.
I use both capsules and coffee in jars but neither are free from their impacts on the environment. Pretending other wise is not clever.

We have a Philips coffee machine, and it grinds the beans with each cup. It also takes coffee powder. It makes cappuccinos with frothy milk if desired.
All the used coffee grains go into compost.
I have no idea how much it costs to make each mug of coffee.

Who here feels guilty about having beans shipped half way round the world to make their drink rather than just digging up some dandelions and burdock?
Me neither.

And not me either. I drink espresso from an on-offer machine bought 5 years ago for 49€, which also does filter coffee. The espresso is made with dosettes which go in the compost. Used filters also get composted, so I think we can feel fairly smug. I don't drink tea.
