We've got 2 Natwest accounts and whilst they have never said anything directly, their terms and conditions do refer to there being a possibility that accounts may be closed. I hope not as the accounts were opened 47 years ago when we married and I would hate to lose that link with the past.

What about Santander? Someone said you need a balance of £75k at all times, but it doesn't imply that when I look them up.

Santander UK will not accept a foreign address. AS with most banks however you can sign up to one of their international accounts (often based in the Channel Islands) for which a substantial initial deposit/minimum amount is required. 75K is however well beyond the top end of what I have seen before - usually in the 15 - 20k range, which as far as I am concerned might just as well be 75k.

According to my research (following info mostly gleaned here), HSBC was the only bank allowing non resident UK accounts.

If NWide doesn't accept OH's application to be added to my account, I suppose we can nonetheless give NS&I and DWP my sort code etc. to make payments to me. OH would then just have to trust me.

There's a branch of Cred Ag in London (used to be South Kensington when I were a young gel, one of my flatmates worked there) but it's in the City now. Might be worth a try, either from this end of contacting them in the UK :

Broadwalk House, 5 Appold St, London EC2A 2DA, Royaume-Uni
+44 20 7214 5000

Only look in from time to time now but I have posted before about Santander.
My lovely oh has had a Santander in Sittingbourne account for a number of years, using our address here use it to purchase pressies for children and grandchildren and amazon.uk purchases, they also handled her inheritance on her dads death very well, never a problem and no where near the £ minimum limit stated on here.

@Doug Good to hear from you after so long.
I have no doubt that for those who got a Santander account before B....t kicked in they provide a super service. [I thought the same about Barclays.] However their current information about opening a simple account is:

Eligibility
You're over 18 and live in the UK permanently

Why they make life so difficult, I cannot say but perhaps this is a mix of B....T, access to financial history and money laundering.

Thanks, no harm in giving them a call. The City is where I opened our original CA account in 1989.
