As ever in France there is a sometimes a big gap between the law and the practical application, DB. Pragmatism reigns where money is in question.
Your driving licence is also a legal requirement but seldom asked for.

From English (auto-translated) page:

A foreigner who wishes to come to France for a tourist stay of less than 3 months must present a proof of accommodation. This document is called acceptance certificate is established by the person who will welcome him at his home during the stay in France. The request is made in the town hall. The certificate is issued if the host meets certain conditions. In case of refusal, appeals are possible.

Not sure what happens to second home owners - they do not seem to fit the criteria.
Perhaps they have proof of accommodation.

So they can present proof of that - of course.

But what is was looking at was the second part - established by the person who will welcome him at his home. That is surely they themselves?

@ AJM and Niemeyjt: about those second home owners and guests from the UK. Is there any reason to worry about a very or too narrow definition or interpretation of the word: domicile?

Reading what LaRousse has to say about it there is some reason for optimism, "home" is not only une résidence principale IMO.

domicile
nom masculin

(latin domicilium, habitation)

1. Lieu où quelqu'un habite en permanence ou de façon habituelle ; résidence : Changer de domicile.
Synonymes :

demeure - habitation - logis - résidence - séjour

Isn’t that exactly the point I was making? Was there a need to repeat it?

The Connexion seems to give a good explanation of what is required regardless of whether visitors are actually asked to prove anything :
https://www.connexionfrance.com/article ... ting-forms
The bit about the attestation from the host is interesting, particularly the last para :

How do you go about obtaining the attestation?
The attestation must be submitted to the local mairie by the person wishing to host the visitor.
Mairies can provide the form – CERFA n०10798 – which can be completed and signed there and then.
The host must normally go to the mairie with an identity card or passport, document proving that they own, rent or occupy the property in question (title deeds and utility bills, for example), proof of funds and of their ability to support the visitor financially if needs be, proof that their property can accommodate the visitor(s) and the passport number of the foreigner.
Some mairies may ask for copies as well as the original documents, so it is advisable to ask your local authority before going to fill in the form.
If the mairie approves the attestation application, they will not necessarily return the completed document immediately, and the host may have to return to collect it.
They must then send it to their guest. If they need to obtain a Schengen visa, they should attach the document to their application, and if they do not they should simply present it to border control when arriving in France.

Does the application come at a cost?
The application costs €30 to be paid in timbres fiscaux which can be bought here or in certain tabacs.
This fee is non-refundable including if the application is rejected.

It took us a long time to find anyone that actually sells timbres fiscaux (for something quite different) .....

As Bayleaf keeps reminding us, "another benefit of Brexshit", My son and his lady friend are coming over to give OH a surprise birthday visit, I can just foresee the scenario that some sort of paperwork arrives in the post box giving them permission to come and stay, surprise, surprise, down the swanee. Never come across so much bullshit in all my life, and I am yet to find anyone who openly admits they voted for it.
