we have a grenier full of stuff that may be useful. I have an electric drill of my father's bought possibly '60s but I bought a new one in 1980ish and that's still called the new drill

Becoming more of a 'clearing out ' person with every week that passes. No kids, so whoever has to deal with the aftermath is likely to be about the same age. It's hardly fair to lumber them with a load of useless junk and if it's going to be tipped eventually anyway, why not now?
The other motivation is the imminence of a big 'leccy bill next month, and probably again in April, depending on the Spring weather. Selling the saleable converts unused clutter to very useful cash.
Technology stuff is the worst. I just binned our first PC tower. I distinctly remember paying £3k for the package. The most we'd ever spent on anything apart from the house we lived in! Now just so much plastic, silicon and metal rubbish. Built-in obsolescence ....now there's a crime against the planet that the ecolos would do well to combat effectively

Those getting rid of PCs - those built after approximately 2011 are likely to be 64 bit - so a charity may take them to recycle them.

Also - photograph the licence stickers - you may find Windows 7 keys will activate later versions of Windows.

I always think of the saying, "It'll come in handy even if you never use it".

License stickers?
That's one way. There are completely free alternatives if you know where to look.
The difficulty is building a PC now to run W7 it is getting tricky to find processors that will run it, and finding drivers for later peripherals like printers, etc.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

If in doubt - chuck it out!

And I stuck to that for my move to France. I reckon I got rid of about 80% of the contents of the house OH and I had lived kin for the last 15 years. He was a great one for hanging on to stuff just in case....

I am looking forward to minimal living and no clutter when I find a house here.

Well done demi, :D

Ive still got boxes of stuff in the attic that haven't been unpacked since we moved over here 20 yrs or so ago - I think I'm in the might be useful one day camp. My house is like an aladin's cave, without the gold and treasure unfortunately.

I have lots of floppy discs with business stuff, my writing and various newsletters I used to write, no disk reader though, I still have the Windows 95 floppys and probably the 3.11.
I've got at least one old fashioned monitor in the caravan along with all sorts of cables that will probably never fit anything again, but you never know.

I am trying to be disciplined, my dearly beloved has decided that the bread maker in which the dough overflowed can't be cleaned off well enough to avoid a fire, so that's got to go and a stainless steel pressure cooker that I haven't used for ages because I've got an electric one now, but I don't want to get rid of it in case we have no electric at some point.
I've got an endless list of gadgets that will probably never get used, but again you never know just when that pasta maker will come in handy do you.

I'd best shut up now before I fill up the forum - and I haven't even mentions OH's stuff in the garage, work shop, wood shed and my polytunnel.

You just reminded me. We have two pressure cookers to get rid of. A large one that is in nearly new condition and a small one that is brand new. They won't work on our new induction cooker.

And if you trust the site owners not to have backdoored anything - not a risk with an ISO from Microsoft - that is just backdoored by Microsoft :-)

Yes - that was why my new PC has Windows 11 on it (with a Windows 7 key) - I would have preferred proper Windows 7. Some functionality can be returned with Start11 - and the spying can be reduced with Shutup10. Sadly, Linux just does not have the programs, drivers and functionality I need for work.
