What did you want to be when you grew up?

Like others, I wanted to be a vet. It never happened, but I did end up working on a farm for 3 years which gave me plenty of opportunity to learn and practise. We had visiting 3rd year vet students who were great teachers. I never wanted to be a nurse (sorry Pathca !) - I have endless patience with animals but none with people

Neither of the two aspirations happened.
When about 7 years old at school we were told to write down what we would like to be. When Mam and Dad went to the parents' evening the teacher told them not only did I want to be an archaeologist I could also spell it!

An air hostess until the age of 12 (hopeless - all that smiling!), then a commercial artist, then a journalist. Then reality and impatience took over and I resolved to be a lawyer.

I wanted to be a scientist. Reality kicked in at o level time. I ended up managing budgets for 250 engineers and scientists - most of whom were permanently totally engrossed in their chosen sphere. so I hope I was of some use!

vet, but i was no good at drawing stuff as required for A level zoology etc so I had a rethink... had to be something which didn't tie me to being indoors all day so surveyor or planner popped up and that's what I did!
How do people live without at least one dog in the house?

Interesting, sounds like you were able to apply directly, initially. I have always resented the fact that I missed out on university because I was told by the officers' training college for the Merchant Navy that entry was only possible at age 16.

Many years later, at a school reunion, I met a classmate who had had a uni education but was then at a loose end and, wandering on the docks at Blyth one day, he fell into conversation with a ship captain who offered him the post of officer cadet on his ship and then spent several years at sea (more than me) rising to 2nd mate. He retired after a long career, as a police inspector. :o I was furious. :x

BTW Spectrum, I also flunked the maths needed for college, but my Dad had a word with a friend.
Also you missed nothing with Shell and BP. I sailed with Shell but the life on a tanker was so boring and unrelieved by decent shore leave, that I jumped ship in Sydney.

With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.........The Corpse Bride
