French elections : Is the left doomed ?
I'm actually quite glad I don't have the vote this time round, there seem to be an awful lot of candidates to choose from.

We might rephrase the question as “ Does the French Left deserve to be elected?”

Bonne question! The answer's a 2-letter word for me, even though a good candidate would at least attract my attention.
Macron is technically a socialist.
I have to say that the candidates on the right (all shades) frighten me, and I don't believe Monsieur tout-le-monde knows what they're up to.

I'm not sure how this is supposed to work if all the leftie parties aren't going to take any notice of it, but Primaire Populaire Is supposed to unite all the left parties behind one candidate. https://www.france24.com/en/europe/2022 ... -democracy

Fragmentation of the vote, no chance therefore of getting beyond the first round.
Vote Poutou, I say, live in idealistic poverty!

Jaysus. He's the one who famously said that if he were elected, no one would have to work!

As it is up to the voters, not the candidates, it could still work.Char wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 4:07 pm I'm not sure how this is supposed to work if all the leftie parties aren't going to take any notice of it, but Primaire Populaire Is supposed to unite all the left parties behind one candidate. https://www.france24.com/en/europe/2022 ... -democracy
But all 500K must back the "winner" come what may, irrespective of whoever else stands.

Whether it works in uniting the lefties or not, it's good to see the French actively trying to reform the existing system. The examples quoted in the article prove what distorted results are obtained with the current one. It still makes my blood boil, though, when friends and acquaintances say they won't bother to vote. If they'd come as close as I did to losing the right altogether, perhaps they wouldn't be so blasé!

Quite. My vote in April will be the first time I've been entitled to vote in a "general" election since 1990. Ah, a supporter of the Universal Credit for all? I'd vote for that!! I've been enjoying not working - trouble is, the bank account is now empty!
