I'm guessing that it's all done by spellcheckers these days that are not very clever at identifying context. Bad spelling has become so endemic that people no longer care about it. Along with honest government and consumer goods that are no longer made to last longer than the warranty period. 8-)
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

The number of people that write loose when they mean lose. Let your dog run loose and you might lose it is an easy way to remember the difference.

I shouldn't have complained really, I can't spell to save my life - I used to get detention because we'd been given a spelling test and I got say 6/10 right the teacher would then give us a while to memorise the words we'd spelt wrong and retest us. I'd then misspell some of the words I got right the first time, she thought I was playing silly beggars but I wasn't.
It used to make me laugh when someone would tell me to look a word up in a dictionary, how can you if you don't know how to spell it.

Thank god for google.

Not knowing the difference between of and off winds me up. Then putting the two together to end up with off of,compounds it.

When l left school a couple of weeks before my 15th birthday it left me with a limited vocabulary both in written and spoken English. Since then l have strived to make myself understood in written and verbal communication with institutions and individuals. What realty gets me going are the grammar, spelling and context police who appear to get enormous pleasure out of belittling others whose use of words is not absolutely perfect. So is it too much to ask for a little patience and understanding of us lesser mortals who do not reach or attain the dizzying heights of the intellectual glitterati who appear to frequent most French forums and look down their noses at people like me?

The purpose of speech and writing is to communicate clearly. If that goal is achieved, the number of mistakes (no matter how many I make or no matter how many irk me) is of very secondary consequence.
