ETIAS or a Schengen Visa from 2024

I have a British passport. I have a visa to enable me to stay in France, which will convert to a carte du sejour when I have been here 5 years.

If I were to go to, say, Italy for a holiday would I need to apply for an Etias visa?

I've read through most of it & can't see any mention about UK nationals living in the EU.

You can more or less travel as you like within Schengen countries with a resident permit for a member country, there are no passport checks. Just make sure the buggers don’t try and stamp your passport if there are. I don’t know if it’s the same for the visa you have. I’ve travelled a fair bit in Europe and have had to insist that there was no stamp, it’s much easier now. If you leave Schengen and then re-enter as I did in Cyprus this year they can stamp you exiting, which I presume is correct.

I hold a temporary long-stay “Residence permit exemption” visa. Can I travel within the Schengen area?
A Type D long-stay visa issued in France or by another Schengen country allows you to travel in the Schengen area for a maximum period of 90 days in any 180-day period during your visa's validity period subject to presenting supporting documents as to the purpose of your visit and your means of subsistence.

It seems that at least sometimes the "buggers" do indeed stamp the passport. It happened to OH. I assume this is a check that you do indeed return to the country of your residence permit within the permitted periods.

I am confused. Why are there any passport checks between the country where you have a CdS / TdS and another Schengen member state?

It happens from time to time - mainly looking for immigrants from outside Europe but I guess in one definition that includes Brits.

To add to that, my experience in Italy with flights, you are required to provide a passport/identity card to the "police" on every flight prior to boarding.
