For me the prime problem of those living in le banlieu is that they have essentially been rejected by society. They consequently have no allegiance to societal norms. This is a problem that covers several generations and so breaking the "norm" is not simple.
When an issue kicks off they react and it only takes the casseurs to then stir the pot and we have the situation we see today.

I don't buy that. There are plenty who live in quartiers sensibles who do well, don't sit at the back of the class making a din or deal drugs in the halls!
There are long-standing residents who try to show difficult ados how to help themselves and others if they want to and not to get dragged into the subculture of drugs and violence. But heck, why train to have a metier at €1400/month when you can earn than in a morning as a dealer's runner?

Yes there are some who do well for themselves, but I am not sure you would call it plenty. The percentage gaining higher education is well down on the national average. Youth unemployment is well above the national average. There are shop keepers and tradespeople but I am not sure that they really offer role models - not that I have anything against either group. You are however right that the gains from illicit operations do however opportunities that they are likely to aspire to.

Let's be clear though. This is certainly not exclusively a French problem. I could personally take you round several similar estates in the UK with just the same problems - except that in the main there is not the propensity to riot. The recent incident in S Wales though shows just how narrow that margin of difference might be.

As I recall the incident in South Wales did not have racial motives - but both cases were a result of Ados thinking the road traffic laws don't apply to them.

I would say it's actually a majority. The ones we hear about are the ones who make the most noise, throw the molotovs, burn their neighbours' cars, etc. As ever, the quiet majority get on with their lives, keeping their heads down and making the most of life without access to pharmacies and medical and emergency services (chased away by oiks). And now shops, because they've been destroyed and looted.
As for education, a will to succeed is the most effective tool in the box. Plenty have demonstrated that they have that will. Parents have a big part to play of course and there was an iten on the news last night on that very subject from one of the banlieues. As so often, women are taking the lead in the fight to keep their sons on the straight and narrow.

Its about time, too. Parents (if they stick around long enough) are best placed to teach right from wrong, not schools, the government, or social media.

It seems however that my madcap ideas are not mine alone.

Poverty, ghetto-like suburban estates, joblessness, limited life chances and social alienation are problems facing younger people in many developed countries, not least Britain. When chronic, unaddressed institutional racism in the justice system, in other state structures and society at large is added to this volatile mix, it’s little wonder uncontained explosions occur. What’s happening in France is a warning to all.

@exile Which just supports my argument. Those who want to break out of the ghetto and succeed will do so. There are plenty in every European country from immigrant families (including my own) who were reviled for their backgrounds and nonetheless fought against it. The one in France who always comes to mind (for me at leat) is Rachida Dati, one of 11 children of working-class immigrants from a Parisian cité. At least one of her brother served time in jail. She was forced into an arranged marriage, but later became an avocat then Justice minister. Pas mal. Not a particularly nice woman by all accounts, but a fighter.

I told my children (who all went to state schools both here and in the UK) that they could be anything they wanted to be. I think parents should be more positive when talking to their children, and I know from listening to other parents (de souche) over the years that they're not.
