Snake bites

How he is still with us is a mystery. His first bite a few years ago was on one of his front legs and made him ill. Antibiotic injection.
His second bite, a couple of years ago,went through his cheek and again ill and antibiotics given.
This third bite was through his cheek, caught his tongue and made him very ill. He disappeared for two days we suspect collapsed in a barn, of which there are many around us, in a coma.
His face was a mess and the vet cleaned the wound out, stitched it for 24 hours and kept him in overnight. She saw him at 8 pm the day he came home, so all the treatment, overnight stay, vaccinations including anaesthetics and a course of antibiotics was 112 euros only.
He also lost his ears 18 months ago because of cancer. The vet removing them.
He has had several treatments for wounds after fights with other cats so he can' t have many lives left. 7 in France or 9 in UK but whatever he's pushing his luck.

Antibiotics - or antivenom?

Maybe he was bitten by the same snake species each time and has built up some resistance?

Antibiotics. We have seen each case be worse than the previous one so resistance? Maybe, maybe not. But he survives.

It is worth remembering that when they bite snakes do not necessarily envenomate.
Also worth knowing that all snake venom is poisonous - just not necessarily to the species that is bitten. This is why the books and sites say many snakes are non-venomous. What they actually mean is non-venomous to humans.

Where this all leads is that infection from a bite can be as much a problem as any venom that ends up being injected.

Poor old puss! I hope he pulls through, Wilbro. Perhaps, just perhaps he'll avoid the nasties from now on?

He's doing well, eating fine, still sleeping a lot, overnight and daytime but still spent a whole day out on Wednesday nevertheless I think he perhaps overdid it.
One would hope he would learn and he was stung by an insect a few years ago and now any buzzy thing and he legs it like a bat out of hell.
Snakes? Well we hope he's learned this time.

Good to hear he's on the mend.

I doubt our dog Blaze ever knew it had been a snake that got him as it all happened so quickly in a gorse bush on the banks of our lake. Thankfully he never had that close an encounter again.

Today marked 9 years since we tragically lost his brother Blitz to an injury sustained during a fatal freak accident in the forest opposite. We buried him in the garden. Today, at last, we reunited the brothers when we finally scattered Blaze's ashes on the grave. It finally felt right. We shall remember them.

I pass the grave at least 8 times every day on my way to and from the paddock. We frequently raise a glass to them and feel so grateful that they were such a big part of our lives - despite being a couple of rascals!
