I think that's right - it took HSBC 2 or three weeks to turn us down.
That's crazy!

UK bank account(s) closure

I'm not going about this the right way. I've just Googled HSBC and their Premier account says you need a minimum balance of £50K etc etc. I'm not looking for a bank, don't need a card, interest. Just a place to collect Sterling from my pension and UK rental income. I'll do all transactions on line. Every so often I'll use Wise to transfer a lump sum to France. I don't want a minimum balance and ideally no monthly fees.

I'm beginning to think I just need a friend who can open a second account which I can use. I'm too old to think rationally when I've done the same old thing for about 50 years or so.

Where can I get independent advice? Perhaps I'm just not explaining myself very well here.

@Leyla
It looks as if you have found their international banking site.

https://www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/products/
gets you to sensible (poor wo/mans' money) accounts.

I'm applying (HSBC) online now but I've never taken a selfie before so I suppose that will be rejected. What is more serious though is that they have rejected my Titre de Sejour which I thought was my French ID - is it not? My passport expired last June so have I had it? I've never been thru' such a process!!

I'm sure they shouldn't reject it - it is a photo ID, isn't it?
I put up my FR carte d'identité, but I seem to recall a residency permit was one of the options.
PS. I'd never taken a selfie either, but I've since bought a smartphone-for-dummies-and-wrinklies.

My "selfie" was taken by the webcam on the laptop during the process of sending ID and proof of residence

I explained to Moneycorp that my Carte de S. was not strictly speaking an ID but then I googled passports and discovered that I could still use an out of date one so they did accept my application. So you are correct in this. However, I don't like Moneycorp - seems unnecessarily complicated, so the search is still on.

Nationwide rejected the chance to have OH as a joint account holder because, they said, I - the accountholder -live outside the UK.

So it's back to Square One for OH.
