Jokes - split
There was a comedian on the tele the other night, who stated, basically, the obvious, joke telling is nearing extinction, you can't mention this, that or anything else, for fear of a backlash from the PC brigade. The dog biscuit joke is quite dated but still quite funny, bit like Jasper Carrots Afghan Hound one.

Matter of interest. When does a joke become 'dated' ?hughnique wrote: ↑Mon Dec 27, 2021 9:21 am There was a comedian on the tele the other night, who stated, basically, the obvious, joke telling is nearing extinction, you can't mention this, that or anything else, for fear of a backlash from the PC brigade. My opinion is that there are always jokes some folk haven't heard or jokes that are so topical, or so bad, they die a natural death . There's always a new generation coming along who will not have heard a good'un so as long as folk can relate to it I think a lot , with maybe a bit of tweaking, will last for yonks.
It would be a shame if silly tales weren't retold because somebody might think it dated.
One of my favourites will always be the story of How King Harold lost his eye but this is best narrated 'live' to give it the build up it deserves. Even my French mates get this with the appropriate 'acting'.

As suggested elsewhere a topic to discuss humour, what is or isn’t acceptable ,what do people find funny, dated etc
Personally I think that Racist,Sexist and Homophobic ‘ jokes ‘ are not appropriate and subjects such as domestic violence are never funny

My opinion is that you have to know where to draw the line and leniency must be afforded from the PC brigade, then where does that leave the Englishman, Irishman and a Scot standing in a bar type jokes, surely Racist, according to some thoughts, or even the dog biscuit joke, bestiality, animal abuse, depends what the reader is interpreting the joke as.

I watched Billy Connolly the other night - I found him still very funny but oh my he would not get away with some of his jokes today - IMHO I think we've got a little bit too serious in some respects as jokes told back in the 60s/70s even 80s didn't seem to offend but then came along 'girl power', woke etc etc etc and I'm not suggesting that that's a bad thing as it makes one sit up and think but it's just gone a bit over the top with seriousness which is a shame cos there's not a lot to laugh about in this world or even make one smile at times. Hey ho life moves on and if nothing changes it stays the same
