Cool gadgets?

#31 Post by RobertArthur »

@ Hughnique, about older technology, anybody still in the possession of valve amplifiers? I once repaired a rather mistreated Radford power amp. The patient came in with the following message: probably damaged beyond repair, dont waste too much time Robert, perhaps you can recover some useful components, the rest for the scrapyard. Many hours later, many new capacitors, resistors, several valves, body work etc. it was in mint condition again. Mind over matter affair, I was proud to return this nice amp to the rightful owner. But I missed the sound. Now a NAD amp is the middle of the hi fi chain here.

This trip down memory lane reminds of Tim de Paravicini, king of tubes. Let's not forget an excellent BBC engineer, Morgan Jones.

A potential backup heating source for the winter if you run out of firewood.

Other vintage memories, the Vox AC 30. Interesting question, what makes a classic instrument amp?

Recording with a live audience, just an impression of a summer concert in Marcilly several years ago. The son of the chateau owner in action with his friends from Paris. Only a very simple Huawei P9 Lite smartphone, not 4K, no image stabilisation, no studio microphone. Only British pop music.

Back when I was in the market, I had a look at Vox amps and was unimpressed. I thought they looked cheap and didn't provoke confidence in their durability. Time proved me wrong.

Hotrodder, the continuing timeline of the VOX AC 30. What helped: very efficient Celestion speakers producing a lot of sound with not too much power from the output stage of the amp. In the early 1960 amps produced by Jennings also moderate amounts of negative feedback in the output stage, so at the onset of clipping the distortion products (guitars!) were rather friendly.

Thanks for posting that link. Very interesting.
I ended up with one of these, made half an hour's drive from where I lived.
