Humour
Years ago I went to see Jimmy Jones, again, as you say, his material from then would not be acceptable in this day and age, he actively sought out a black face in the audience, with a line such as I wouldn't have spotted you if you had not smiled. But then you knew what the performance was about before you went, same as Bernard Manning.

Sanitising humour keeps dirty secrets in the closet, making those who perpatrate (sp) feel safe because noone is saying anything and those on the recieving end thing noone is interested.
Whether it should be sanitised for television is another argument

I am sure any joke can offend someone - if they are looking to be offended.
A man walked into a bar and said "ouch" - Tommy Cooper.
"I'm offended" - Phineas Gage.
IT Tip of the Day - in your browser, if you press the backspace key, it takes you to the previous page you viewed.
As I cannot think of a single member of this forum who goes out of their way to court controversy or offend (unlike in some places) maybe for those who dislike others' differing opinions or humour - just press backspace.

It's a tricky situation, humour and opinions online.
I find we are generally OK here, and Char does a great job, but yes, 'we' will make mistakes and offend someone when we don't mean to. Maybe a quiet word by pm would be better in some cases than posting back and starting up a spat, a bit like drifting away from a conversation which you are not comfortable with in a café* or other gathering**.
* when you can stand up and talk to who you like, rather than just sitting round a table with friends!
** remember going out freely and socialising?

How do people live without at least one dog in the house?

@niemeyjt 'backspace' what an excellent idea thanks for the
moment - not that I'm easily offended each to their own as the saying goes.
With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.........The Corpse Bride
