I was amused to see this article on the BBC website about the problems of snails in a postbox in Lewdown, Devon.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cqq71y6399eo
We sometimes find our mail has been nibbled, if we haven't looked in the box for a couple of days, or particularly if we've been away.
Up until recently, we haven't heard of anyone else with the same problem, but it seems we are not alone. It isn't just the envelope glue they like, they nibble plain pieces of paper. It hadn't occurred to me to put any sort of "deterrent" in the box, but I have no intention of poisoning them. I'll just have to check the box more often and clear away any uninvited guests.

Funny ! Of all the living 'creatures' we seem to have round here, I haven't seen anything nibbling on the mail in the mailbox - YET.
The current wave here is roly poly bugs (Armadillidium). A wave of them will begin crawling into the house each evening around sunset. Dozens of them. I spend about an hour collecting them all and tossing them out.

Yep, just removed two snails from inside the post box when I collected today!
It would make a new excuse instead of the dog eating your homework - sorry, but the snails ate your Facture!

Used to be wasps in our last house's post box, but snails would eat the labels off tins in the cave.

The snails are simply auditioning to become posties.
Rumour has it that Royal Mail may recruit them to speed up deliveries.

I took once my homework with me when I went fishing. I moved to the other side of the pond, but left my satchel and books behind, and when I looked across I saw a cow licking something where I had been.
I rushed back, shooed the cow away, and found it had licked all the red finish from my hard cover physics experiment book.
My physics master was not impressed, and the "cow licked my book" didn't go down any better than the old dog story.
