Sauerkraut

#11 Post by Grangela »

I had sauerkraut once and never again. I was on a youth exchange trip to Germany in 1961. One of our outings was to the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg. We were given lunch in the factory canteen. Sauerkraut and bratwurst. I tried, I really did. The smell was, and still is, unforgettable.

Have to agree. I think it is a love it or hate it type of thing. Not really an in-between.

I do like it, but have to be in the mood for it. The smell can be awful when you just aren't in the mood for cabbage. Even when I DO feel like having it, the smell can still be unappealing. Kinda like the smell of boiled eggs or fish cooking. I like both of those, but hate the way they smell when cooking.

I too like it from time to time but cannot say I have been offended by the smell, though I tend to buy it prepared or to use that R Stein cheats recipe above. Yes I know it's not fermented but the flavours are very similar and it takes 1 hour rather than a week or so or a two hour round trip to buy pre-prepared - which I always think lacks juniper, which I became accustomed to while in SW Germany.

I quite like it with a decent sausage or slice of pork from Eric le Sausage (your basement butcher).
The smell's fine to me unlike the dreaded andouillette
