I am probably showing my complete ignorance here, but is not Macron's share of the vote higher than he reasonably could have expected ?? I thought that he would barely muster the 12,5% required for the next round.

You need to take into account folks like my friends in the village..they voted for the Macronist candidat because 'Sir' used to play chess with him So...there's a carefully thought-out vote

Some may have voted for Macron's party because they didn't want to vote for any of the others. At least they bothered to vote ...

The second round will be more telling as there may be some interesting alliances to fight against the RN.

I've already seen that Melanchon will withdraw candidates where he has finished 3rd as also will Attal. Could be a very mixed up result next week.

I actually was expecting worse. It is of course not good for Macron but there are still good possibilities.

I think voting against RN and ending up with Melanchon will just reinforce what I have said before apropos Hollande's election - and we all know what happened then.

I think Melanchon and friends grasp of economics is less even than Le Pen or Liz Truss.

Well I finally voted for la majorité présidentielle, but looking at the results of our circonscription - almost a dead heat between the RN and le nouveau front populaire - the choice will be easier next Sunday. Better Red than Dead. I just hope the rest of the country feels the same.

I guess we must hope that the markets and the EU remind, whoever wins, about the state of finances before they do anything to exacerbate the situation. Both of them seem to think they have found more seeds for the money tree.
