And also make sure people have your passwords - otherwise, all those family photos on the encrypted disk drive (for example) will be lost to posterity.

Yes, I think it has to be within 6 working days in France. Better than Ireland, where funerals are held within 2 days.
I plan to leave standard letters for our children (all of them live in France) and appointed two of them as executors of our English wills. The latter is an essential IMO to smooth the way if you have any assets in the UK (bank accounts, premium bonds, etc.) and don't want your beloveds to fork out for translations of anything other than the death certificate.
You can easily download and adapt a standard will, just be sure to have it witnessed properly and dated.
