I’ve been following the project on instagram. It is truly staggering. The artisans have been fantastic. Such a brilliant opportunity for them to showcase their skills.

The artisans who have recreated Notre Dame have produced a fabulous result. Artisans charge what they like because they are the best at what they do and jobs like this don’t come along very often. I know one of the stone masons who has worked on Notre Dame and he is top class and his charges are based on the weight of the stone he used! There are also many young workers here who are gaining immense experience in conservation practise. This work is now finished and they will now go back to a normal working life. I applaud them

+4. My friend's brother is a charpentier who was lucky enough to be selected to work on the cathedral. He put his all into it for much the same reward as he would have got for a local job. The prestige will be priceless in the future, though.

I think everyone agrees that the Notre Dame reconstruction project was a fantastic success. But there is a lot of controversy about the reopening ceremony. Some think that, since Notre Dame is a religious building, Macron should not strut around there inviting world celebrities who have no deep connection to the Catholic religion. Others think that this cathedral is part of France's cultural heritage and that its President could invite whoever he wanted to come and admire "his" work. €840 million was donated by private individuals mainly. So more than the cost of the renovation (700 million). Did these people think that they were giving to the Catholic Church or to the State ? Since 1789, Notre Dame has belonged to the State, which makes it available to the Catholic Church, which can therefore be considered a "tenant". If I own an apartment that I rent out and I finance expensive renovation work, that doesn't give me the right to go and organize a party at my tenant's house !
Who is right, who is wrong ? "French-style" secularism is still far from clear !
